Sustainable Change Through African-Led Initiatives
Purpose
The objectives of GAP are:
- To show the American public, foundations, and individual donors that the African-led approach is best;
- To expand the networks of African-led initiatives;
- To connect African-led initiatives to resources and contacts in the US to establish stable support systems.
Problem
There is near universal agreement – among Africans, Europeans, Americans, and Asians alike – that Africa can develop and achieve economic growth only when Africans themselves lead the effort.
For many years the Western World has invested billions in African development. This top-down development model has enriched a few and impoverished many.The top-down model is bankrupt and exploitative–and worse than that, it does not work.
The new model must involve Africans taking the lead. Under such a system, investors would save billions of dollars, shorten time to profitability and create sustainable businesses under stable governance.
process
GAP is the African-led approach to development in Africa. Africans first identify their needs, invest their time and resources, and collaborate with others to transform their own lives. Phelps Stokes partners with Africans who already have initiatives in or for Africa to ensure these initiatives gain well-deserved visibility, secure funding and resources, and expand their networks.
participants
GAP brings together 30 young African leaders. These Africans know the needs of their community, know the solutions, and have already begun working to meet those needs. Phelps Stokes selects leaders with initiatives that coincide with Phelps Stokes’ mission—to develop the educational leadership capacity of under-served communities.
