Program Focus

After a century of excellence in Africa, Phelps Stokes’ Program for Africa and Freedom Endowment (PAFE) implements its programs through the focalization of activities in specific geographic areas and communities. Universities serve as clusters for the centers of excellence. In developing and implementing programs, PAFE builds alliances and partnerships with these universities, grassroots organizations, government and private organizations. The implementation is grounded in what we call “Centers of Excellence in Education, Leadership Development, IT and Training, Service Learning, and Social Mobilization.”

As the foundation of social and economic progress, education holds immense weight. In order to enrich the lives of the individuals in the communities we serve, we design and implement programs around the fortification and improvement of educational systems and resources.

We rely on leaders to dream up creative innovations and to envision new opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, however, we need leaders to inspire others. Our programs for leadership focus on not just supplying resources to current leaders, but also creating avenues for the individual to inspire future leaders.

Our global community is linked by technology. Unfortunately, as technology continues to progress at faster and faster rates, some communities are left behind. In order to bridge this widening technology gap, we implement programs focused on information technology and training.

There are few experiences that impact an individual more than a hands-on learning experience.  In order to introduce individuals to opportunities and perspectives they might not otherwise be aware of, we have created programs revolving around service learning experiences.

There is no greater power than that of a united community. We have created programs focusing on social mobilization because we know that with the support of neighbors, individuals can progress even further than they would otherwise.
